Spotswood CC joins Subbies

Spotswood Cricket Club are thrilled to announce that we will be joining the Victorian Sub District Cricket Association (VSDCA) from the 2021-22 season.
4 clubs, Donvale CC, Port Melbourne CC, Strathmore CC and Spotswood CC were admitted in to the newly expanded VSDCA.
After an association with the VTCA from 1929, our club believes this move will enhance our future and create a pathway for our junior cricketers.
Our senior cricketers/teams will play under fantastic conditions in a well-structured competition. We will be tested, but I am sure the Spotty spirit will get us through.

If you are interesting in becoming part of this exciting journey please make contact with our friendly committee members.

Meet the Coach – Dan Schuppan, Sunday 5 August

Sunday 5 August at 12:30pm…

Come down to Two Birds Brewing to meet Dan Schuppan, our newly appointed Club Coach. Dan is a former Geelong, Carlton and Keilor player, who brings a wealth of experience and knowledge to help us improve our cricket and further develop a strong culture at the club. He’s already been busy at work talking to key contacts at the club, and setting the foundations for a great year ahead. So come and hear his plan. He’s also a GREAT bloke by the way.

In other news, former Spotswood CC junior player Mac Short, a top order bat, is now back from a stint at Melbourne and Thilina Masmulla, an opening batsman, has signed with us too. A former Paxino medallist (best player in senior division), Thilina will head the batting for us. Allan Wise’s former left arm spinning Richmond teammate Matthew Sazenis, who has been overseas for a few years, will also be playing with us this year. And Gagen Sokhey is also back in town and keen to play again at Spotty.

A warm welcome to these new and returning faces and all returning Spotty players, in what promises to be a very exciting year at our Club. Get it started the right way on Sunday 5 August with our Meet the Coach day.

Spread the word and help support women/girls in sport.

SNR 2nds Grand Final Winners

Congratulations to our 2nd XI team on taking out the Senior Seconds Grand Final against Airport West during a 4 day battle. With Airport West winning the toss and batting, they appeared to be on track to post a good score at 3/100 after 40 overs.  A run out after the tea break caused a massive batting collapse with 7 wickets falling for just 23 runs. N.Bartol the stand out bowler with 5/13 off 10 overs.

Spotty’s reply started off shaky with the early loss of wickets and closed the first days play at 4/28.  The start of the second days play didn’t get any better with the loss of 3 wickets to see us at 7/70. Enter in Mark “Scorpion” Cranwell who battled hard with N.Bartol to build a 63 run partnership which got us over the 1st innings target. In trying to push for a decent lead, the final 3 wickets fell in a few overs, giving us a 12 run lead. Spotswood 1st innings total of 135. (N.Bartol 45, M.Cranwell 24)

Airport West had a better second innings effort with the bat and managed a total of 192 after 91 overs.

Spotswood in their final hit for the year would have to make the decision of chasing down the 181 target or face out 97 overs.  Spotswood chose the latter. With one of the most mature innings you will ever see from a 17 year old, Our future, Jack “SOS” Fitzharris batted out 70 overs for 28. M.Short would had to have broken some form of cricketing record facing 70 balls for a duck (0). Captain Daniel McNamara had a great knock and batted some valuable time for 45 runs.

At 4/92 with 24 overs remaining Spotswood was able to hold out after a little scare when 3 fell. N.Bartol was able to hold out unbeaten on 16 with S.Hoare the other not out batsmen. (D. McNamara 45, J.Fitzharris 28)
